FAQs

  • Grog is made from fired clay that is crushed before reintroducing it back into clay. Grog acts as a temper, which can help reduce shrinkage and cracking in clay.

Flecks and Specks grog is made from colored clay that is fired, crushed, and separated by size. Besides adding strength to the clay like traditional grogs, our grog adds texture and color to the clay. Adding grog is an easy way to personalize ceramic wares.

  • Yes! For wheel-throwing, you can wedge grog into your clay before you throw, and this will evenly distribute the grog throughout the clay body.

  • Yes! Trim as you normally would. The larger the grog, the more dramatic the texture. A light sponging after trimming will help accentuate the grog.

  • Yes! For hand building you can wedge the grog into the clay if you want it incorporated into the clay, or you can sprinkle the grog on top of slabs and set with a rolling pin. For a more intentional placement, you can simply press the grog into soft clay with your fingers.

  • Yes! You can add grog to casting slip. The grog will stay suspended in the casting slip with proper specific gravity. Sizes XS, S, and M are recommended for casting. Sponging the clay will help reveal the grog.

  • Yes! Bisque and glaze as you normally would. If you use an opaque glaze, it may cover up the grog, so transparent glazes are recommended.

  • Drizzle is our first special effect grog! It is made to run and bleed into, or through, your glaze! Drizzle SPFX is punchy enough to bring cobalt blue spots through most glazes, even opaque, stiff white glazes. Transparent glazes with high fluidity will help promote the “pulling” of the color in a downward direction, but flat surface that do not have gravity working in their favor may stay as blue speckles, rather than blue runs.

Drizzle works best when covered with a glaze that is known to move, and the movement can be promoted with a 2-10 minute hold at peak temperature of the glaze firing. A double or triple dip (thicker application) can also promote this movement, along with a slow or medium glaze firing speed, which will give the glaze more time at a high temperature to move a bit. See below for good clear glaze base recipes that will create the cobalt blue “crying” on the surface. Zinc free glazes are commonly used over colored surfaces such as underglaze to limit color change and movement, but in this case, the cobalt blue color will not be affected by the presence of zinc.

Drizzle SPFX grog may fume onto your kiln shelves if direct contact is made, so we recommend firing pieces with direct shelf contact on kiln washed shelves or on cookies.

  • Yes! Grog can also be added to glaze for sculptural surfaces to add texture and unique surfaces. Adding grog to glaze is not recommended for functional pottery surfaces

  • XL Grog (10 mesh)

Use XL grog when you want a lot of “tooth” in the clay, and want a surface that is textured (imagine a colorful Shigaraki ware!) The 10 mesh grog will be bold, and will catch in trimming tools, creating unexpected and raw surfaces. Throwing with XL Grog feels like throwing with clay with small rocks in it. Soft clay is recommended for throwing and trimming with XL Grog, and will be easier on your hands!

    L Grog (20 mesh)

Use L Grog for vibrant effects in hand-building and wheel-throwing. L Grog will create smaller pits when throwing and trimming. Soft clay is recommended for throwing and trimming L Grog.

    M Grog (30 mesh)

M grog is very similar in size to play sand in a sandbox. M Grog is forgiving for throwing, trimming, and staying suspended in casting slips.

    S Grog (40 mesh)

S Grog is like a fine sand, and adds smaller specks to the clay. It can easily be smoothed and refined.

    XS Grog (50 mesh)

XS Grog is our finest mesh. Use it for small speckles, that are more subtle, but still highly visible.

  • There isn’t a right or wrong answer to this question! Each mesh can be used for hand building and wheel throwing. Generally the larger meshes (L and XL) are good for a bolder, more organic effect. The smaller meshes (M, S, XS) are good for smaller specks of color and a more refined surface.

  • All types of clay! You can add Flecks + Specks to porcelain, stoneware, earthenware, and casting slip.

  • We have used Flecks + Specks Grog in electric, gas, soda, salt, and wood kilns. Flecks + Specks can be added to any temperature of firing up to Cone 10. Beyond that, colors will start to fade. Test the colors first before using them in reduction firings. Some of the colors will change in reduction firings.

  • Yes! You can mix as many colors and meshes together as you want! For example, you can purchase a S Pink Lemonade and a L Parakeet and mix them together!

  • Yes, you can add slip or underglaze over the grog. It will not affect the material. But – if your application is opaque, it will cover up the color of the grog, so putting slip and underglaze under the grog is recommended to not hide the color of the grog.

  • You can add anything from a small sprinkle to a generous amount. Because the colors are so bright, a little goes a long way. For example, when making a mug, we usually wedge approximately half to one teaspoons of grog into the clay.

  • Yes! Make sure the grog is incorporated into the clay by wedging or rolling. It is easiest to incorporate the grog when your clay is soft! The grog behaves like sand in the making and firing processes, and becomes part of the clay.
